Phil ~ Kent, what prompted you to write this book? Why do pastors need to hear what God is saying through you?

Kent ~ I have worked with business leaders for 30 years as a fellow business leader and owner. Most of them had tried to have a relationship with their pastor and found a wall. Most felt guilty about not being at church enough of the time. Most pastors that I met while speaking at their churches were frustrated, alone, and had no one in their church to really talk to. We need to return to the model of Jesus as He discipled and mentored leaders.

Phil ~ How does your duel perspective as a student of the Bible and a successful business leader pervade the book?

Kent ~ God has allowed me to boldly point pastors and workplace leaders back to the bible. I have spoken on about 20 seminary campuses and can biblically challenge them to return to the New Testament form of equipping. We are currently helping two seminaries start mentoring programs for their students with current pastors and workplace leaders. This will revolutionize how we equip future pastors and Christian vocational workers. Business leaders pay thousands in the secular marketplace to get coaching which is a biblical model.

Phil ~ Church members you label as "horses" learn differently than the typical person in the pew. In what ways and how does that affect their participation?

Kent ~ They tend to stay back and not follow the crowd or be involved. They just give money, serve on a committee, and perhaps if they get real active, then they burn out in 5 to 7 years. They are loners. They like to start new things. Most churches are too institutional for them.

Phil ~ Explain how this template can assist a pastor in relating and discipling the men and women who are the "horses" in their midst:

Kent ~

  • Telling This is the message of the church and done thru media, radio, TV, ads, etc.
  • Teaching This is the pulpit and classes to large groups
  • Training this is done in seminars or classes or 20 to 70 over a few weeks. Most of our programs are 6 weeks video and not long term life change.
  • Tutoring (one-on-one) Equipping, or coaching, or mentoring or tutoring is a one on one or one or three or one on twelve. Jesus modeled this with the 3 and the 12 and his modeled His one on one time with the Father.

Phil ~ Our culture has changed. In the past, the "horses" were satisfied with contributing financially and sitting on a board or committee but today they are looking for meaningful engagement with events or initiatives that produce impact ...

Kent ~ Yes, church will change radically and missions is changing. Most of these leaders want to be a part of something of a big and eternal vision and not just with money. Churches need money, leaders, and more impact into the secular community and equipping a FEW leaders on the side with help a pastor with his three issues. OR he can turn them over to an outside group who will equip them and give them back to the local church to also be used there. Unfortunately, about 80% of our leaders are being trained by the para church or individuals outside the church. Leaders will go where they get help. Our churches are mostly on a Greek teaching model and Not a Judeo modeling form of mentoring and training.

Phil ~ What attitudes or fears might cause pastors to ignore or refuse to engage the marketplace leaders in their sphere of influence?

Kent ~ Pastors are intimidated, but so are we as business leaders by them being "spiritual" while we are not. Pastors can ignore the issue, but it is not going away. We are seeing bridges built and leaders equipped and released into the workplace and communities to represent the local church and Christ's Kingdom in the secular workplace.

Phil ~ Kent, please write a prayer that a pastor could pray as they seek to move forward in shepherding strong leaders who can impact society ...

Kent ~ "Dear Father, allow me to humble my self and help me to build deep intimate relationships with a few workplace leaders over the next few years. Please show me how to affirm them in their calling in the marketplace and show me how to encourage and equip them to be followers of Jesus where God has placed them. Lord, I want to publicly commission them and other various groups with different talents and gifts in the workplace at various times to GO into there sphere of influence. As I as their pastor and we as a church release them to be used by you for your purposes, I will not try to control, measure, or take credit for what you do through them and the many that are impacted by their lives. Show us how that together we can build your Kingdom through relationships and community and bring long lasting transformation to our community by the changed lives which will result from our working together for your Glory!"
